Take-home coding assignments are increasingly preferred by hiring teams over high-pressure whiteboard algorithms. They evaluate how you structure real code, handle edge cases, write automated tests, and communicate architectural decisions in a real-world setting.
What Reviewers Check First (Before Even Reading Your Logic)
- README Clarity: Can the engineer spin up your application in under two minutes with a single command (e.g., 'docker-compose up' or 'npm run dev')?
- Git Commit History: Are your commits granular, descriptive, and logical, showing an iterative problem-solving progression?
- Automated Test Coverage: Did you include comprehensive unit and integration tests covering both happy paths and edge failures?
- Error Handling: Does the application fail gracefully with user-friendly errors, or does it crash with unhandled promise rejections?
The Follow-Up Defense Interview
When presenting your submission to senior engineers, be prepared to discuss trade-offs: what you would implement differently if given two weeks instead of two days, how the system would scale under 100x traffic, and where caching or database indexing would be introduced.
